Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I hope that I’ve gone the right way here in moving from WordPress.com to my own self-hosted WordPress installation. I have ideas and things I want to do with this blog that go beyond what WordPress.com could do for me, including the new theme and layout.
Inspired by other hyper-local bloggers like Miss 604, 642Blog.ca is going to focus on local Sooke content. Events, community info, history, people, and real estate will be topics covered. Have an event? let me know. Ideas for articles? Ditto.
I highly recommend you subscribe to the feed from this blog for free updates. I blog daily, and you won’t want to miss it. In the sidebar you can find instructions and information about subscribing.
I want this to be a community effort and a forum for discussion of local issues. I encourage you to comment (anonymously, even) on any post, good or bad. Just look for the comments box or link.
And for those not in the know, the 642 in 642Blog comes from our phone numbers in Sooke, which mostly start with 642. Yes. We’re all up in the 642, y’all.
On Wednesday, September 19th, our office held our annual charity golf mixer event at Cedar Hill Golf Course in Victoria. It was a perfect day – bright and sunny, not too hot or too cold. Everyone had a great time – from the avid golfers to the inexperienced hacks. Best of all, we raised $18,235 for our Shelter Foundation, which benefits local shelters and programmes for women and children.
Here are some pictures from the event:

Last weekend, Coast Capital Savings and Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty in Sooke, BC, teamed up to sell golf balls & t-shirts and put on a bake sale to raise money for Cops For Cancer – Tour De Rock. The event was a huge success, raising $492.20 for the charity. A big thank-you goes out to the community and all of the employees at the bank and local REALTORS® who baked, bought, and volunteered to make this event a success.
Furthering our discussion on Web 2.0, this short video helps explain a little more as to what the buzz-word is all about.
Some of this may seem abstract, and the end of the video relates more to software and application developers, but the basic concept is good, and this video gives you a good idea on how the Web has changed and what is the future of the Internet.
If Web 2.0 is engaging users (people), then it should not take too much of a semantic leap to make the connection to our profession. The bar has been raised as to the type of content the user wants to see. It won’t be sufficient any longer for you to post a static, boring listing. Users will want the ability to interact with your content – comment on your listings, post reviews of your services, pose questions on your forum, upload pictures of their neighbourhoods, or provide other users with objective advice on your content and your professional services.
I’ve recently gotten into reading real estate and technology blogs, and I’ve noticed that no one in the Victoria area has a proper blog for real estate. There are plenty of marketing blogs from REALTOR® Web sites – you know the ones – they are usually automatically created when the agent uploads a listing, holds an open house, marks the listing as sold, etc. Mine is www.sellingsooke.ca/Blog.php.
So what will you see here? I will write articles about issues that affect real estate professionals, including REALTORS®, mortgage brokers, lawyers, appraisers and more. I will post information about trends in real estate technology. I will eventually have guest authors and contributors who will write articles in their field of expertise.
In short – this will be an invaluable resource for you and your real estate business.
I encourage you all to subscribe to this blog using your favorite newsreader. I will update is as often as I can, at least a few times a week.
Thanks for visiting What The Sooke?! I hope you will visit often, or even better, subscribe via the links in the side bar.
