Horrible MLS Photo Of The Day #269

November 28th, 2008

It’s probably not that dark in this room, but the bright light coming in the window and the white blinds have thrown off the camera’s light meter, causing the camera to think the room is brighter than it actually is, and thereby underexposing it. The same thing fooled the camera into not firing a flash to illuminate the room a little more. This can be avoided by setting the camera to fire the flash with every shot, instead of automatically. Now, the same can’t be said for the REALTOR®, who should have first of all turned the lights on, and second, realized that this was a bad shot after reviewing it on the camera’s LCD screen.

Horrible MLS Photo Of The Day #241

October 31st, 2008

A nice scary one for Hallowe’en! Picture is crooked/off centre, TV is on, poor composition too. Try and shoot rooms at an angle, rather than having your lens pointed perpendicular to the wall. It adds depth perception. And avoid shooting photos at night, they always look too dark.

Distress Sale: Can't Pay The Hydro Bill

Distress Sale: Can't Pay The Hyrdo Bill

This beauty comes courtesy of reader Dara Sklar of RealtySupport.ca. As a provider of marketing services for REALTORS®, she has a hate-on for bad MLS photos as much as I do. This photo could have been improved by simply turning on some lights or using proper camera lighting.

Horrible MLS Photo Of The Day #209

September 29th, 2008

Again I’d like to point out my desire to smack the people at the digital camera manufacturers who decided that the “date stamp” setting should be set to “on” when the cameras are shipped. Most people don’t bother to learn how to turn it off, and it looks awful. It’s also redundant; all digital camera files are date-stamped in the jpeg file’s metadata (along with info like shutter speed, aperature, focal length, etc), which doesn’t show up in the photo.

Also, this isn’t a very good shot of the bathroom. Dark, poorly composed, and too tight an angle. Wide-angle lenses are your friend.

Horrible MLS Photo Of The Day #201

September 21st, 2008

Another Day, another violation of Ayres Directive #1. The REALTOR® managed to capture most of the bathroom by standing back, but with a wide-angle lens, he or she would be able to do that without including the walls and doorway in the frame.

Sit, Have Tea, Work Out.

Nearly every home has a room like this. A place in the house where you put everything that really doesn’t fit anywhere else. In this case, we’ve got music, fitness, and extra furniture, it appears. Th first problem with this photo is that it’s too dark. We also have no idea how big or small this room is, and it’s not very well composed. Sometimes, I’ll have a listing where every other room in the house looks perfect, but there’s one that just isn’t right. I usually leave that room out, or wait until the owner rearranges it after my suggestions.

A Light At The End Of The Tunnel

A Light At The End Of The Tunnel

Besides being crooked and kind of grainy, this photo suffers from too much light coming in from the window in the other room. It’s fooling the camera’s light meter once again, underexposing this picture and making it dark. Opening those curtains on the right and/or turning on some lights would have helped immensely.

Horrible MLS Photo Of The Day #185

September 5th, 2008

This dark and dreary image could have been improved greatly simply by standing in the opposite corner, and shooting in the same direction as that beautiful natural light coming in the windows. Shooting towards it fools your camera into thinking the scene is brighter than it actually is, resulting in an underexposed photo.
