Sooke Rotary Auction and Spring Fair 2010

Springtime in Sooke – Cherry blossoms, daffodils, tulips. A season of renewal is upon us as the days get longer and the weather gets warmer. For the last 20 years, another sign of spring in Sooke has been the Sooke Rotary Club‘s annual auction and spring fair.

This year’s fair, the 20th anniversary of this important fund raising event for the Rotary Club, will be held Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 10:00am to 10:00 pm. As usual, the entire SEAPARC leisure complex on Phillips Road will be taken over with exhibits from local businesses, fabulous food, and dozens of items up for sale in silent and live auctions.

This year will be a little different in that the Rotarians are hosting a community party with the theme “Sooke – A Great Place To Be!”

Don’t miss:

  •   Business Expo
  • Children’s Play Area
  • Art Show and Sale
  • Community Dinner
  • Silent and Live Auctions
  • Sooke’s O-Zone Display (from the Olympics)
  • Used Bike Sale
  • Country Market and Plant Sale
  • Raffle, door prizes, and giveaways

Everyone is invited, from new residents to long-time Sooke-ites to those that don’t yet live here. Mark your calendars and come on down on the first to enjoy the bargains, the sights, sounds, and smells of the Sooke Rotary Auction and Spring Fair.

Victoria Christmas Events: Sooke Santa Skate This Sunday, December 20, 2009

Santa Skate

Sooke Santa Skate

The annual Sooke Santa Skate, put on by our team at Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty and SEAPARC, will be held this Sunday, December 20th, 2009 at the SEAPARC Arena. Join us from 1:30 until 3:00 for a fun, family event. Admission is by donation of non-perishable food items, new, unwrapped toys, or cash to support Sooke families in need this Christmas.

Your local REALTORS® from the Royal LePage Coast Capital office will be on hand passing out free and tasty hot chocolate and hot dogs and collecting your generous donations. Skate rentals are also included if you do not have your own. Bring your camera and get a memorable picture with Skating Santa Claus!

Last year’s event was a success, despite having been postponed due to adverse road conditions brought on by the wild winter weather we had last December. Hopefully we’ll have a typically mild day, making it easy for everyone to safely get to the arena.

I hope to see you there!

Sooke’s SEAPARC Arena and Pool Expansion/Renovation

seaparc1

We’re lucky in Sooke to have such a nice facility for recreation as the SEAPARC (Sooke and Electoral Area Parks And Recreation Commission) arena and pool. The facility, located on Philips road just off Sooke Road is modern, clean, and a great value.

Since moving to Sooke almost 4 years ago, I’ve enjoyed the pool and arena, but must admit I’d use the facility more if it had a fitness facility. Currently there is a small aerobics room for drop-in and regular classes, but no weight room or cardio studio.

In 2008, the subject of expansion of the facility to include a weight room and aerobics facility came up, and after some public consultation some conceptual drawings (1,2,3,4) were done up and the plan was put forward. This week, I received a survey in the mail outlining some of the details of the project as well as the potential costs involved. It’s planned that two-thirds of the estimated $2.7 million cost of the expansion will be funded through various grants and federal and provincial money as well as other funding sources. That leaves about $1 million to come out of SEAPARC’s budget, which of course is funded by you and me, the taxpayer.

If the project goes ahead, there would be a corresponding increase in property taxes in the District of Sooke and the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area, which pay for SEAPARC. What does borrowing $1 million look like on your taxes? About $20 per year for an average home in Sooke and about $14 for an average home in JDF. Not much, really for such an important and exciting project.

The expansion would add a second storey viewing area and expand the existing arena dressing room and aerobics, in addition to the weight room and other fitness facilities.

By adding these new options at the SEAPARC recreation complex, we would also be adding the user base of the facility. There is only one similar gym in Sooke – Odyssey Fitness – and a second option would be great for our town. Plus, I’d love the ability to go for a hard workout and then take a dip in the pool or hot tub! If the user base increases then perhaps the increase in revenue could offset the tax increase someday.

Watch for the survey in the mail, or click here to download it, and then drop it off either at SEAPARC reception, Bill’s Store in East Sooke, Kemp Lake Store in Otter Point, or the Port Renfrew Community Centre. Or, simply scan and e-mail it to seaparc@crd.bc.ca.

It’s your town, your facility and your money – let SEAPARC know what you think!

Santa is Adventurous in Sooke: Santa SWIM this Saturday!

Nice Shirt!

Nice Shirt!

I just found out about this via the Kids In Victoria forums, so details are a little sparse. This Saturday, December 20th, 2008 you can swim with Scuba Santa at the SEAPARC recreation complex in Sooke from 1 until 3.

There will be games to play and prizes to be won.

I had no idea Santa was such a sporting enthusiast. Swimming on Saturday and skating on Sunday!

If anyone has any more details about this event (cost, etc.), please leave a comment below!

Sooke Santa Skate Postponed – Now On Dec 21, 2008

Much to my surprise, I arrived at the SEAPARC arena yesterday to set up for the Sooke Santa Skate and no one else from the office was there. Apparently, the arena had trouble getting staff there because of the snow on Saturday night and Santa had difficulty getting there too. So, the skate is now scheduled for this Sunday, December 21st, 2008 at the same time, 2:00 – 3:00. More information can be found on my previous post about the event.
