Sooke Spirit Festival was a Success – Sailpast Video

This past Saturday saw the 2nd annual Sooke Spirit Festival which was a resounding success. What started as a small event in a snowstorm last year, grew into a well organized and well attended family affair this year.

I was driving the lead boat (the Coast Guard Auxiliary boat) in the sailpast, and managed to shoot a little bit of video to give you an idea what it looked like out there if you missed it. What a perfect night to be on the water. A little chilly, but the wind held off until after the sailpast, which was a big plus. There were lots of people on the boardwalk watching the dozen-plus decorated boats sparkle on the crystal-clear and calm evening on Sooke Harbour.

Check out the video I shot below. It’s mostly of the boats getting ready and of the beautiful harbour before sundown, as I was driving the boat during the actual sailpast. If anyone has any better video, shoot me an email and let me know and I’ll post it!

Fall Photo Walk Along The Sooke Harbour Boardwalk

As I watched the sun rising over the back fence and into my home office, I was reminded why I love this season so much.  The crisp, cool air, a bright blue sky, and the golden hue of the morning sun on the colourful autumn leaves prompted me to bundle up and shoot a few photos on a walk along the spectacular Sooke Harbour boardwalk.

Parking the car at the lot on Murray Road, I walked up Murray towards Sooke Road to capture some of the leaves in the trees. I had noticed this the last sunny day we had and had meant to get back there to capture it. Unfortunately the wind over the past few days has pretty much stripped the trees, but they still look pretty on the ground.

Walking down the hill towards the Rotary Pier/boardwalk access, I snapped a few photos of the sun shining through the leaves, and reflecting off the harbour.

I love looking at this house whenever I head out on the boardwalk.

The pier and boardwalk are framed perfectly by the trees

Just because it isn’t summer doesn’t mean you can’t toss a trap in the water for crab. It was deserted on the often-busy pier, save for this couple.

There were lots of leaves left on the trees along the water. The harbour was so still, it was like a mirror, reflecting the trees. Gorgeous!

The harbour boardwalk is a real gem, we’re lucky to have it. It goes from the bottom of Murray Road all the way to Ed Macgregor Park, where it switch-backs gently across the slope offering easy access to and from the water.

I hope you enjoyed the photos! If you’d like to see the whole set, you can view it on Flickr.

Close Encounter with Killer Whales (Orca) Outside Sooke Harbour [VIDEO]

What follows below is nothing short of spectacular. Jason from DiscoverSooke.com and Allan from West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals were enjoying some time in Allan’s rental Hobie inflatable kayaks on a rare perfectly calm day on the Strait of Juan de Fuca just outside Sooke Harbour. They launched out of Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina and paddled out towards Secretary Island. There had been reports of whales in the area, but nothing could prepare them for what was about to happen.

The whales approached, tentatively at first, but then got curious as to what these two craft were doing, and were soon diving underneath and around the kayaks. An experience those two will never forget, to be sure. The video is a little long, but worth watching, trust me.

Whales are certainly common around the Sooke region, and Russ from Sooke Whale Watching (Sooke Coastal Explorations) can get you out to see them in comfort and safety. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss if you visit Sooke.

Looking for an interesting dining experience? Join local Sooke chef extraordinaire Kari Osselton and Captain Ralph for a 3-4 hour dinner cruise departing from Sooke on July 25, 2009 at 5:00.

Step aboard ROLANO, an 80-foot long vessel which holds the distinction as the only floating B&B approved by Tourism British Columbia. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the harbour as you dine on fresh sushi prepared by Kari. The cost is $100 per person or $175 per couple and reservations must be made at 250-744-4908.

Rolano

ROLANO is also the site of Sooke’s Sushi on the Sea, which serves sushi in an intimate setting when she is tied to the wharf on the weekends. Kari Osselton also runs Kari’s Catering and has done a spectacular job for several of our real estate office functions. Her latest endeavour is Souki Sushi, which serves up the good stuff next to Stick in The Mud Coffee.

Derelict Tug Florence Fliburg Burns in Sooke Harbour [Video]

UPDATED – NEW VIDEO FROM COAST GUARD AUXILIARY

Being a member of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary here in Sooke,  I seem to have the worst luck with missing the really interesting emergency calls. I was on the mainland for Christmas with family when the Florence Filburg broke loose from its mooring and ended up beached across from Billings Spit in Sooke Harbour.

And last night, at approximately 8:45PM, sitting in my mother’s house in Delta, BC,  my rescue pager went off  for the end of the Florence Filburg. I missed out again.

It’s pretty obvious that somebody set it on fire. The eyewitness in the video below mentions that two individuals had been caught, but that has not been confirmed by any news source I’ve heard. I’ll try and update this story as it unfolds.

Good riddance, I say. It’s an eyesore that will now hopefully be gone for good.

What did you see? Have any more pictures or video? What do you think? Let me know.

Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina – Recreational Ownership Opportunities

Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina

Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina - photo by Jason van der Valk

Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina is a beautiful oceanside resort development located in the heart of Sooke, British Columbia. Sooke is a small seaside community on the southwest tip of Vancouver Island, about a 45-minute drive away from Victoria.

The development was completed in 2006, and since then, 70% of the project has been sold. The developers recently engaged the team at Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty in Sooke to market the remaining units. They felt that our local representation and the strength of the MLS® would be the key to getting the rest of the project sold.

The Resort is unique in Sooke in that you can own a whole unit, or choose a fractional ownership option of one quarter or one eighth share, depending on your budget and your needs. I currently hold the listing for unit 145, which is for sale at an amazing price of $399,900. I can also sell quarter shares at $125,000, or eighth shares at $64,000. Fractional ownership is whole ownership of a part of the property. It is not the same as timeshare. With timeshare, you do not own anything and are not registered on the title to the property. With fractional ownership, you are the registered owner of the property, along with the other owners. An agreement is put in place for use of the property, and there is a rotation ensuring that each owner gets his or her share of prime time in the unit.

IMG_7532All the units at Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina come fully furnished and equipped, and have an on-site management team who will take care of all maintenance, interior and exterior. You simply show up to your vacation getaway, and it is exactly as you left it before. If you wish, you can also place your townhouse in the rental pool, and earn income when you’re not using the property!

Unit 145 has stunning panoramic views of Sooke Harbour and Basin, the Strait of Juan De Fuca, and the Olympic Mountains. It has about 1140 square feet of luxury living space, two balconies, two bedrooms and two full baths. The floor plan is well thought out and functional.

Salmon and halibut fishing is outstanding in Sooke, and this year has so far been the best in recent memory. Sooke fishing charters can be arranged right from the comfort of your vacation getaway home, or launch your own boat from the ramp. Book a scenic and exciting tour with a local Sooke whale watching company, right on site. Kayak rentals are also available, to explore the placid waters of the Harbour and Basin. Be sure to check out the new photo art gallery by local photographer and graphic designer, Jason van der Valk of Discover Sooke.

This is truly a great opportunity for an easy, accessible, and affordable vacation home or investment property. This is the only such development in Sooke, which is fast becoming the place to be on southern Vancouver Island.

Please see the listing page on my website for more information and pictures. Call me any time at 250-885-0512, email Tim@TimAyres.ca or fill in my contact form to ask questions or book your personal tour.
